Paying with crypto

Last reviewed November 1, 2026

Buying coffee with bitcoin is still rare. Even so, there are now a few practical ways to use crypto day to day.

Most crypto spending is indirect: a card sells your coins in the background and the merchant receives dollars or pounds. Direct payments are more common with online services and over the Lightning Network.

Crypto cards

Several exchanges issue debit cards linked to your crypto balance. When you pay, the card sells coins automatically. Check conversion fees, spreads and which coins get sold first.

Lightning in practice

A Lightning wallet lets you pay small amounts in bitcoin almost instantly for almost nothing. Some merchants and online services accept Lightning directly. For large amounts a normal on-chain transaction is usually the better fit.

Paying with stablecoins

Stablecoins settle in minutes at any hour, so freelancers and businesses use them for cross-border payments. Payment companies have started settling card transactions in stablecoins behind the scenes.

Spending is a disposal

In both the US and the UK, paying for something with crypto counts as disposing of it. If the coin rose in value since you bought it, you may owe tax on the gain, even on small purchases. See tax.
